The climax of the revolution, when, on July 14, 1789, the people stormed the Bastille - a medieval fortress guarding the eastern entrance to Paris that had been used for hundreds of years by the oppressive rulers as an armoury and political prison. It was the beginning of democracy. The end of tyrannical rule, and the downfall of King Louis XVI and his wife Marie-Antoinette, who were later executed.
