A new Phnom Penh company, Yekowave, might be the answer to all those failed New Year’s Resolutions. We talk a lot at this time of year of the things we’re going to do to make us become better versions of ourselves, presumably so that by the end of the year we’ll have won all the prizes, promotions and pay rises that have somehow eluded us until now. Of course, these new versions of ourselves rarely survive beyond January, and we don’t really expect them to either. One of the reasons for this is that we don’t tend to regard resolutions as fun or liberating. But it doesn’t have to be like that. And for those who’ve sworn to spend more (any) time in the gym this year, we’ve found a great way for making sure you keep up your resolve well beyond January.
Yekowave was founded this year by Dhikra Yagoubi and Christophe Arathoon, two sports fanatics, who have taken their passion and skills in textile engineering and business and applied them to creating a stylish, comfortable and practical range of sportswear that is designed, made and marketed in Cambodia.
Yekowave sportswear is made from lightweight materials that are breathable and functional. They help keep you cool. And they’re also sustainable, made from organic or recovered materials that have anti-bacterial properties so your work-out won’t leave you smelling like an elephant that’s just run a marathon — even if sometimes you might feel that way.
“We wanted to create a good-looking and innovative product,” said Dhikra when we spoke to her. “Something that is not just about offering the basics, but is beautiful too”.
Yekowave’s range of leggings, tops and t-shirts have been designed for fans of yoga, fitness, running and dance, and so far the range has been designed for women. However, there is a men’s fitness and running collection on the way in the early part of next year.
It’s been shown that we’re more likely to stick with our workouts if we look good while we’re doing it. Yekowave offers an opportunity to not only look, but also feel good, and all while supporting a young, local company. All the better for making sure we get to keep those New Year’s Resolutions going to the next year, and beyond.
